I finally got around to cleaning out the nest that the Great Crested Flycatchers (GCFs) built in our Red Bellied Woodpecker nest box. My neighbor Bob was nice enough to help me lower the woodpecker nest box to the ground so I could clean it, reload it with pine shavings, and put it back up.
The GCFs used pine straw and dried oak leaves to layer their nest on top of the pine shavings to the correct height. Notice how the nest has no “cup” to it.
